Collateral circulation and diabetes.

چکیده
The article by Abaci et al 1 in this issue of Circulation draws our attention to a very important and novel observation that patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) have a lesser ability to develop collateral blood vessels in the presence of coronary artery disease. This is somewhat surprising, because DM is known to stimulate angiogenesis, at least in the retina of the eye, and is, because of capillary leakiness, a major cause of blindness. This article by Abaci et al is a good example for drawing attention to the recently appreciated fact that not all vascular growth should be called angiogenesis. The functionally more important collateral vessels of the heart are not the product of angiogenesis but rather of “arteriogenesis.”

The impact of diabetes on the extent of pial collaterals in acute ischemic stroke patients.
INTRODUCTION The threatened vascular territory in ischemic stroke is maintained by pial collateral circulation. Neovascularization varies among organ systems in diabetic patients. The effect of diabetes on the extent of pial collaterals is not well known. The pial collateral supply was compared among diabetic and non-diabetic patients presenting with acute ischemic stroke. MATERIAL AND METHOD...
متن کاملImpaired collateral vessel development in diabetes: potential cellular mechanisms and therapeutic implications.
The formation of coronary collateral vessels is a compensatory mechanism secondary to repetitive or chronic myocardial ischemia. During the past three decades the functional and prognostic benefit of such collateral vessels has been established. There are large interindividual differences in the number and extent of collateral vessels that may be explained by differences in the anatomic situati...
متن کاملPredictor of poor coronary collaterals in chronic kidney disease population with significant coronary artery disease
BACKGROUND Coronary collateral circulation plays an important role to protect myocardium from ischemia, preserve myocardial contractility and reduce cardiovascular events. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with poor coronary collateral development and cardiovascular outcome. However, limited research investigates the predictors for collateral development in the CKD population. METHOD...
متن کاملComplete interruption of the aortic arch. 2. Characteristic angiographic features with emphasis on collateral circulation to the descending aorta.
The angiocardiograms of 17 patients with aortic arch interruption are reviewed to emphasize the variations in arch interruption and origin of the brachiocephalic vessels, and collateral circulation to the descending aorta. Depending on the anatomical type and subtype of arch interruption, collateral flow to the descending aorta in the presence of a stenotic or closed ductus will be dependent on...
متن کاملCoronary Collateral Circulation in Patients of Coronary Ectasia with Significant Coronary Artery Disease
OBJECTIVES Patients with coronary ectasia (CE) usually have coexisting coronary stenosis resulting in myoischemia. Coronary collateral plays an important role in protecting myocardium from ischemia and reducing cardiovascular events. However, limited studies investigate the role of CE in coronary collaterals development. METHODS We evaluated 1020 consecutive patients undergoing coronary angio...
